When used indiscriminately, outdoor lighting can <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/resources\/what-is-light-pollution\/effects\/wildlife-ecosystems\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"82\">disrupt wildlife<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/resources\/what-is-light-pollution\/effects\/human-health\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"206\">impact human health<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/resources\/what-is-light-pollution\/effects\/energy-climate\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"190\">waste money and energy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/resources\/what-is-light-pollution\/effects\/energy-climate\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"190\">contribute to climate change<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/resources\/what-is-light-pollution\/effects\/night-sky-heritage\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"195\">block our view of the universe<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eight out of 10 people worldwide live under a light-polluted sky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Light pollution is <em>doubling<\/em> every eight years, wreaking even more havoc on all life forms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biodiversity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\">Virtually every species studied has been harmed by light pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Globally, 27% of the land surface is affected by light at night.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost 50% of terrestrial protected areas are impacted by light at night.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research has found species like grunion and plover are affected by light at very dim levels \u2014 as low as that provided by a half moon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy and climate change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\">Wasted light is wasted energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Light emissions from the continents represent 246,238 gigawatt-hours of energy, costing at least $50 billion (U.S.) annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Street lights consume approximately 2.3% of global electricity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public health and equity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-lg-font-size\">Light pollution impacts quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In one study, women exposed to high levels of light pollution had a 14% increased risk of breast cancer compared to exposure to low levels. As levels of outdoor light at night increased, so did breast cancer rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Light pollution is 2.46-fold higher in areas with the most socially disadvantaged groups, compared to the least vulnerable communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Light pollution is simply an <em>unintended consequence<\/em> of using light at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not against lighting; we are <em>for<\/em> responsible outdoor lighting at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed in 2022 in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/who-we-are\/advocates\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"10352\">Advocates<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/ways-to-give\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"11411\">members<\/a>, the DarkSky International <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/who-we-are\/board\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"472\">Board of Directors<\/a> approved a bold new strategic plan to slow the growth of light pollution and begin to reverse it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-2-xl-font-size\">To rapidly reduce light pollution, DarkSky Advocates need to be more effective, powerful, and aligned around an overarching strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our mission<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural darkness at night is protected worldwide as essential for people and nature.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our vision<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To restore the nighttime environment and protect communities and wildlife from light pollution.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our approach<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We empower the dark sky movement and provide leadership, tools, and resources for individuals, policymakers, and industry, to reduce light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting that is beautiful, healthy, and functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We bring the issue of light pollution to diverse communities worldwide, with the goal of creating access to information about the destructive impact of over-lighting and the benefits of responsible lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our values<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all our words and deeds we are guided by our core values.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Passionate<\/strong> We are enthusiastic advocates for restoring and protecting the natural nighttime environment essential to all living things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inclusive<\/strong> We believe the natural nighttime environment is a basic human right&nbsp;\u2014 for every person for all time \u2014 celebrated in diverse communities&#8217; cultures and heritage.
