University Track and Soccer Field in Nova Scotia becomes first DarkSky Approved Outdoor Sports Lighting project outside the United States

Recognizing the need for extended usability after dark, Université Sainte-Anne prioritized the installation of outdoor lighting designed to protect the night. Given its location within the Acadian Skies and Mi’kmaw Lands Starlight Reserve—with important habitat for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway—the university committed to using lighting technology that minimizes environmental impact while providing reliable visibility for evening activities.

That commitment led the university to adopt DarkSky International’s science-based criteria for outdoor sports lighting—becoming the first site outside the United States to be certified through the program. A proud achievement for a new and innovative program that is quickly growing.

What Makes It “DarkSky Approved”?

DarkSky International’s Outdoor Sports Lighting program provides a framework for designing, evaluating, and certifying sports lighting installations that minimize light pollution. The certification process includes two key phases:

  1. Design Compliance: Review and approval of proposed lighting plans to ensure alignment with DarkSky’s technical standards.
  2. Installation Certification: On-site verification that lighting systems are installed as designed and functioning properly.

Certified projects must meet strict standards grounded in the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting at Night, with particular focus on the following key indicators:

  • Limiting light spill and glare into surrounding neighborhoods
  • Reducing high-angle light that spills into the sky, preventing skyglow
  • Implementing curfew controls to protect nocturnal wildlife
  • Increasing energy efficiency to support long-term environmental sustainability

A Model for Communities Around the World

The success at Université Sainte-Anne proves that big strides in protecting the night can be accomplished at the community level. This project demonstrates that responsible lighting is both achievable and beneficial, and that athletic facilities can remain vibrant community centers without compromising the natural night that plants, animals, and neighbors enjoy and depend on.
